Scott, This worked great. Turns out, in Hotwire at least, the search string has a c: in it (loc: to be precise). We block access to the C: drive with -c: in url.txt. So I explicitly added +loc: before -c: and now Hotwire works, without giving access to the C: drive. I'll keep the debug string on so ...

Thanks, Scott. I'll try it this morning. A patron reported the same problem last night with Monster.com.

Access denied when performing routine tasks

Greetings, We're using PWB v. 2.09.1 in a public library setting, on Windows XP Professional Dells, all of year-old vintage. Recently we had two patrons trying to perform routine tasks on these URLS: www.jdate.com and www.hotwire.com On Jdate, the patron was trying to use Jdate's built-in "emai...

I was thinking that XP Pro could let you do it via group policy. But would this work on flash-based "programs", such as AOL Express? Currently folks can't run this from our PCs because we've blocked the pages from which you can load it....

NY Times article re Ceedo / PowerToGo Software

Greetings, Since, like many of you, I am engaged in the never-ending struggle to keep library desktops secure yet user-friendly, a recent article in the NY Times' technology section caught my eye: http://tinyurl.com/fqolr Long story short, Ceedo and PowerToGo software will enable flash drive users t...

Hi Scott,

We actually invoked PWB just by double-clicking on its icon, right from the folder where all of the PWB files live. We did this just to test how things would work out before propagating the updated exe and ini files to the other OPACs. JP

"Failed to create empty document"

Hello PWB-ers, We have a few library catalogs still running some version of PWB 2.08, and we want to upgrade them to 2.09.3. We ran the .ini updater program, downloaded from this website, and converted the ver 2.08 pwb.ini to ver 2.09. Or so we thought. When we try to run the 2.09.3 version of pwb.e...

PWB version 2.09.2 and email crashes

Greetings, Some of our patrons are experiencing very frequent PWB crashes when using AOL email, via www.aol.com. This morning, a patron told me that he used to be able to look at multiple email accounts on multiple windows simultaneously (Yahoo Mail, Hotmail, etc.), but that as of today, all the PCs...

With the upgrade to DF Enterprise, the problems have largely gone away. No more hide and seek, and only occasionally the lapse into maintenance mode. Twice in a few months. I haven't had time to download the very latest version, but perhaps all the problems will vanish when I do. In any case, so far...

Wow, someone else actually had this problem too???? At times we thought we were the only ones.... I emailed Faronics, but since our contract was up, I never got an answer. However, with the new Enterprise edition we purchased a few months ago, things are working very well. One exception: a computer ...

The really weird thing is that only our new Dell PCs are affected by the Deep Freeze disappearance and reappearance. We expanded our library in 2005, and now offer twice as many public pcs. When we first opened up again to the public in 11/05, we were worried that the old, clunker no-name pcs would ...
