Issues Loading SWF files directly

Post by Scott »

There is a security issue in Windows XP SP2 and IE 7 that prevent applications that host the Internet Explorer web browser control from opening Flash (SWF) files directly. This security issue was dealt with in PWB v2.10.3.

If you are having problems with sites loading and are using Windows XP SP2 or Internet Explorer 7, upgrading to the newest version of PWB may correct the problem.

This issue affects sites such as http://www.webkinz.com.

Most of the time upgrading to the newest PWB should fix the problem, however we have seen one library have this problem that upgrading did not fix.

Here is the manual solution that fixed their problem.

1. Click “Start”, “Run”.
2. Enter “regedit”
3. Find and select the following registry entry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\MAIN\FeatureControl\FEATURE_LOCALMACHINE_LOCKDOWN
4. Click “Edit”, “New”, and “DWORD”
5. The name should be set to the process name of the application "PWB.exe” (without the quotes)
6. The Value (double-click on the newly created entry) should be set to “1” (this opts the process into this feature, enabling the workaround)
7. Close the Registry Editor
8. Close all open instances of the affected process (and IE) and restart the program.
