Need Advice - Public Library

Post by cceller »

We have long used PWB to lock down certain public machines, mostly OPACs and PCs used for database use only. Some of the popular genealogy sites are not working as well with PWB/IE. As I have not been here in a long time, would you suggest I move to the Chromium version or do you have other suggestions?

Thanks,

Yes, I would recommend switching to PWB CEF (Chrome) as it does not suffer from the Internet Explorer compatibility issues.

The only issue with switching to PWB CEF is it is not recommended to run the application directly from a network share as you can with PWB IE. You can still use shared INI and secondary files. The reason is Internet Explorer is already installed on all Windows computers locally, and PWB CEF includes the Chrome HTML Rendering Engine with the distribution.

Incidentally, PWB CEF has the ability to open IE tabs, so if there is a site that only works with IE, you can still use it with PWB CEF.

Thanks Scott.

From one of your other posts it looks like a simple switch as well.

Hi Scott, does Chrome have any downsides btw? People must be using IE for a reason, no?

PWB CEF as it can run an IE window if there is a site that does not work with Chrome. For example a web site that uses an ActiveX control.

The only downside is PWB CEF cannot be ran directly from a network drive as PWB IE can be. This is because PWB IE uses the IE engine installed on the local computer, and PWB CEF has its own HTML rendering engine.
