Hotmail attachments and Internet Explorer

Post by Scott »

If you receive the following message or similar when trying to download an attachment in Hotmail.

"Internet Explorer cannot download from ..."

"Internet Explorer was not able to open this Internet Site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found."

Here is the solution:

If you log into Hotmail and check the box "Always ask for my e-mail address and password" it will not let you open attachments. Hotmail is actually protecting you by not letting you download personal attachments onto a "public" computer.

Scott,

We had to make an additional change on our end to get this to work.
Here's my notes:

1) In IE: Tools - Internet Options - Advanced - Security

Check the box: "Do not save encrypted pages to disk"

Click "OK" to save change.

2) In Hotmail, when logging in, uncheck the box labeled:

"Do not remember my e-mail address for future sign-in. (Select this when
using a public computer.)"

When you do these two, you can save or open attachments from Hotmail. For the public, it's counterintuitive, because it will require them to use a
less secure option and their e-mail address will appear the next time
Hotmail is accessed. But it does work.

If you use a cookie deleter, or a drive wiper like DriveShield or DeepFreeze, then that isn't an issue.

I have to disagree with Spragers only because during the course of a day public machines don't get reimaged or rebooted often, and sometimes only at the end of the day. Not good for those hundreds of people using the pc's during regular hours.

Fair enough 8)

I should have qualified that by stating that our computers are rebooted after every user, and DriveShield wipes out changes (I lost count of how many people came up to the desk saying "I just logged off and forgot to save something, can you get it back for me?"

The Clear Cache utility currently available on our Beta test page deletes the IE cache files and cookies. This can be used as a Shellbar button.

PWB v2.08.1 also deletes the cookies when clearing the cache files.

Andrew,
Those Hotmail options are no longer available since they revamped their site. Now you have three choices of saving both email and password, just the email address and saving neither. Checking the "do not save encrypted files to disk" option makes no difference when I tried it. You have to at least tell Hotmail to save your email address. I'm sure v2.08.1 of PWB will take care of patron privacy though..
