Computer Policy, Launch and Address Bar

Post by jpapier »

Howdy,

Question for the group: we want patrons to have to click on a button saying "I agree to the library's computer policy" before they access the Internet.

I downloaded and tried out Launch, from the Teamsoftware website. It works great, except that if the browser is left open after customer #1 is done with their session, then customer #2 can hop on the Net without clicking on the "I agree button."

Another option I played around with was not using Launch, and instead just having the opening PWB page go to two links, "I agree to the policy" and "I don't agree." But if I disable the address bar and control-O from that first page (so they can't bypass clicking on the agree/disagree buttons), when they click on the "I agree" link, the address bar remains disabled in subsequent web pages, since a secondary window is not being opened up. If it were a secondary window, we could have the address bar reappear.

Are my only options using the PWB inactivity timer (an option we tried in the past, the patrons didn't care for it), or using a formal Internet signup system such as SAM?

Thanks,

JP

The only way PWB knows if customer #1 is finished, is if customer #1 closes PWB. There are several ways that PWB can be closed including links on pages and shellbar buttons.

The only way around this that I know of is if you use the inactivity timer to close PWB.

If someone can think of a way to tell when customer #1 is finished without using the inactivity timer I am open for suggestions.

Here is a post that details password protection although you could easily change it to a policy page.

Hey Scott,

Thanks for your clear and prompt reply.

We have a really good setup now, using PWB and logon scripts , so that our more than 75 public pcs will be fairly easily to manage and keep secure.

PWB is an excellent product, and I want to thank you for all the time and effort you and Michelle have put into it. It's made our lives easier over the last few years here at SBPL.
