Set PWB as Default Browser

Post by eberrocal »

I'm setting up some computers for public use. These computers will be used for Microsoft Office use only. However, if a patron were to click on a link within a document, IE starts. We don't want IE to start. We would like for PWB to start. PWB is installed on the computers. How do I set this up? Thanks!

You can use the free Browser Helper Object ManageIE available on our download page to prevent Internet Explorer from opening.

I tried ManageIE first to prevent IE from starting. However, I would like for PWB to start. I tried SetPWB next, but it's not working, IE continues to start. Any suggestions? Thanks.

You could use the ManageIE on our beta download page and add the DWORD value to the registry to open PWB to the denied URL as indicated in the read me file.

OpenPWBToURL=1

This will only work when using PWB with the PWB.INI file in the same folder as the PWB.EXE file, and not when using alternate or shared INI files.

...as indicated in the read me file.
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\TeamSoftware Solutions\ManageIE]

"OpenPWBToURL"=dword:00000000
Open Public Web Browser v2 to denied URL

Unfortunately this is not working. I've got PWB and ManageIE installed. Then I added the registry entry you indicated (by the way, I still don't see that information in readme.txt)

When ManageIE is enabled and I click on a link, nothing happens. When I disable ManageIE and click on a link, IE opens. I would like for PWB to open.

Any other ideas? Your help is greatly, greatly appreciated! Thanks.

You could use the ManageIE on our beta download page...
Did you download ManageIE from the Beta Download page?
http://www.teamsoftwaresolutions.com/betadownloads.html

What you are trying will not work with the ManageIE that is currently on the regular download page.

Sadly this is still not working.

Yes, I downloaded ManageIE from the Beta page and I added the registry setting per your directions.

What's happens is that I get a blank IE page or nothing at all. However, I would like for PWB to open.

Any other suggestions? Thanks!

I just want to add to my previous post that I'm using Microsoft's Shared Computer Toolkit for Windows XP. I don't think this is causing my problems, but thought you should know. Thanks.

Just tried PWB and ManageIE on a computer withOUT the Shared Computer Toolkit. Same thing. PWB is not starting up when clicking on a link from within Word. Just an empty IE window.

What is the date on the ManageIE DLL that you are using?

What happens if you try to run Internet Explorer directly?

Is PWB running when you click on the link in Word?

The dll is dated 5/19/06.

Our patrons don't have access to the start menu or desktop on the computer, so running IE directly is not possible.

I've tried this with PWB closed and opened. In both cases nothing happens.

Thanks again.
