Slow reaction when using Sirsi-Dynix Enterprise Catalog

Post by JeffDavis »

We are experiencing a substantial lag when using our new Sirsi-Dynix Enterprise Catalog website. When I go to http://pbcls.ent.sirsi.net and perform a search the results page takes a very long time to complete. The status bar shows the page waiting on numerous items to finish downloading. If I try to click on an item to see the details, the details pane takes upwards of 30 seconds to display. But if I wait for the results page to finish loading, then click on an item to see the details, the details pane shows up quickly.
And the results page/details pane loads very quickly when using IE.

I am using PWB 2.11.7 on both Win7 (IE9 & 10) and XP (IE8), with both default and custom INI files. I also have the latest versions of Flash and Java. Any thoughts?

Do you get the same reaction if you use IE directly?

If you run PWB side by side with IE do you get the same reaction?

Please send a copy of your INI file as an attachment to support@teamsoftwaresolutions.com

Yes, with IE running (immediate response) the PWB still has the issue (using the 'Internet' INI emailed to Support).

Solution found. A logging function in a Sirsi script was causing the problem. Thanks for your help.

Can TeamSoftware Solutions confirm that SirsiDynix's Enterprise catalog can be used with PWB v.2+? My library is in a consortium which will be moving to this SD product in the next few months. Some people were under the impression that these 2 systems can not be used together... The consortium office was suggesting we might want to move to a different "kiosk" type product, and I'm strongly opposed to this. I find that PWB works very well with our current web catalog (BiblioCommons) and I already have good configs for it. I was thinking I just needed to change a few url settings in my ini to have it work ok with Enterprise.

I'd appreciate a response to confirm that I could stay with PWB when we cutover to new web catalog. Thanks!

PWB hosts the Internet Explorer Web Browser Control installed on the computer to render all the HTML. So if Sirsi Dynix's Enterprise catalog works with the version of Internet Explorer installed on your computer it will work with PWB.

We are also experiencing the delay with SD Enterprise. We are using version 2.11.3 with IE 10 and 11 on Windows 7. Can you explain more about the issue with the logging function in the Sirsi script?

Jeff
Jeff will have to answer the Sirsi script problem as that is on the Sirsi side.

The Sirsi web site does not seem to be compatible with Internet Explorer 10.0+. When a site is not compatible with a site you get the "torn paper" icon in Internet Explorer (see Sirsi.png attached). When a site is compatible with Internet Explorer the "torn paper" icon is not present (see Bing.png attached).

There are 3 options:

1. Set PWB in compatibility mode by setting the following in your INI file.

[Browser]
IEBrowserEmulation=9000

2. Remove IE 10.0/11.0 and go with IE 9.0.

3. Use PWB v3 CEF. PWB v3 CEF is a Chrome based browser which does not have all the IE compatibility issues.

Cannot find IEBrowser Emulation in our INI file, do I just add the line in?

You need to be using PWB 2.11.0 or newer.

If the setting is not in your INI file you just need to add it.

On our test PC in the office we have 2.11.3 and 2.11.9. We are using IE 11. I am not able to duplicate the compatibility error in IE with our catalog page that you provided screen shots of. In IE our catalog works flawlessly and with no broken page icon at the top. When we try to use PWB on the same PC we experience a lag of 7-15 seconds to open an item as well as a flash screen every time we click to open an item/link. Our home icon button within the catalog page works in IE but not in PWB. I have added the IEBrowser Emulation to the INI file with no change in our PWB experience. Any other suggestions?

Have you tried PWB v2 side by side with IE on the same computer logged in as the same user?

Try using PWB v3 CEF which uses Chrome instead of IE.
